Well folks, it’s that time of year again. To the disdain of wives and girlfriends everywhere, men have put down their razors in honor of “No Shave November” or as some know it, “Movember”.
Men have grown mustaches, and seemingly, shaved them, since the Stone Age. Throughout history, mustaches and facial hair have symbolized power, royalty, and masculinity. Maybe Queensboro needs to add a mustache to our logo! Although mustaches have been primarily worn by men, famous artist Frida Kahlo has been one of the few women to don a mustache, as seen in her self-portraits.
Nowadays, facial hair is no longer just for men herding cattle. Even the number of mustache and facial hair styles are on the rise. According to The World Beard and Moustache Championships, there are currently eighteen categories of facial hair. These include well known grooming styles, such as “The Natural”, the Elvis inspired “Sideburns”, and of course, the mustache integrated “Full Beard Natural”. In spite years of exile, mustaches have made quite a comeback.
Mustaches in Popular Culture
Who are your favorite mustached men? Flanders from The Simpsons has donned a mustache since the cartoon aired in 1989. Notable celebs with facial hair have included Tom Selleck, Hulk Hogan, and Groucho Marx. Alex Trebeck, long time host of Jeopardy, had a mustache for 30 years, before shaving it off in 2001.
In honor of “Movember”, mustached Nick Offerman of NBC’s Parks and Recreation released a hilarious PSA for Movember, encouraging young men not to give up on their mustache aspirations, as “it gets fuller”. “Movember”, a spin off of “No Shave November”, was organized to encourage men to discuss possible health issues and disease prevention. Participants take on the no shave pledge in order to raise money for various men’s health causes.
Can mustached men really help promote men’s health?
The “Movember” event was initially founded in 2003 in Melbourne, Australia with the sole purpose of raising awareness about men’s health. Since, the month of November has caused quite a mustache frenzy worldwide, inspiring men everywhere to give up their shaving cream for an entire month.
According to the official Movember site, last year, sponsored participants raised over 126.3 million USD for various men’s wellness causes. This year, in the United States alone, over over 7 million dollars will be donated, thanks to over 194k registered participants.
